Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to question particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
