Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
