Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
