Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
