In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
