The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
